JOHN BIGGS was born in Tasmania, and has lived and taught in several countries. He spent many years in Hong Kong, including the tumultuous period before and after the hand-over of the former British Colony to China. This period is the backdrop for his current novel, The Girl in the Golden House (Pandanus Press, released July, 2003), which a story of sexual awakening complicated by the political realities of modern Hong Kong and traditional Chinese beliefs on love, marriage and career. Falling leaves return to their roots, as the Chinese proverb says, so John fell back to Hobart, where he writes about what he felt his life would have been like had he been born in different countries, at different times. He has published extensively in the parallel universe of academe, but in the real world where writers live, he has published several award winning short stories, with three other novels at various stages of production, also about sex and misunderstanding, one way or another. John thinks this is because he has lived with too little of the former and too much of the latter.
