MARTIN HAWES was born in the UK and has lived in Tasmania since he was twelve. In his early teens he discovered a passion for the Tasmanian wilderness, which became the focus of much of his life. He has worked as a wilderness photographer since the late 1970s, and has spent much of the past 15 years writing on philosophical issues. His photographs and essays have appeared in numerous publications including 40º South magazine.

In 2000 Martin collaborated with the Cygnet-based duo Alchemy to produce The Island, a multimedia production featuring projected photographs, live music and pre-recorded wilderness sounds. The performance also features spoken lyrics composed by Martin.

Martin's first book, Above me only Sky: A portrait of the Tasmanian Wilderness, was published in 1981. 2003 saw the release of Twelve Principles: Living with integrity in the twenty-first century, which explores ways in which individuals can respond to the prevailing global situation. Twelve Principles includes a foreword by Senator Bob Brown, and personal accounts by twelve people around the world who are exploring positive change in their own lives and communities. Beautifully designed and printed in full colour, the book is illustrated with photos by Martin and other photographers.

Twelve Principles is published by Finch Publishing (Sydney) and is being distributed in Australia and New Zealand by Simon & Schuster. To find out more about Twelve Principles, see http://www.twelveprinciples.net.
