MEGAN SCHAFFNER arrived in Hobart in 1961 from South Africa where she had worked as a librarian and speech teacher, and participated in Repertory and Shakespearian theatre. She taught speech, drama and movement at the Teachers College, Hobart and later was a drama adviser in the Tasmanian Education Dept.

Megan has a BA degree from the University of Tasmania, having majored in English and Psychology. In retirement her interests include running poetry groups that meet to enjoy poetry, ranging across the literatures of many countries and centuries. Her article about the poetry groups, Kindling Sparks: Poetry in Hobart, is published in a 2003 issue of Five Bells, which focused on poetry in Tasmania. She has recently published Pip & Charlie, (2002) a biography of her English grandparents, and is one of four women whose poems and articles are collected in Grim Works (2000).

She has had poems and short stories published in several literary journals including Westerly, Fine Line and Social Alternatives. As well as writing she enjoys editing and proofreading the work of writer friends. She lives with a magnificent view of the Derwent seen through peppermint gums, and must turns her back on it to get any work done.
