STEPHEN EDGAR was born in Sydney in 1951 and educated at Sydney Technical High School. He lived in London and travelled in Europe between 1971 and 1974. On his return to Australia he moved to Hobart where he has lived since. He studied at the University of Tasmania, receiving a BA in Classics and subsequently a Diploma in Librarianship.

He works as a freelance editor, indexer and proofreader and has long been associated with the literary quarterly Island, for which he is subeditor, and was at one time poetry editor. He is the author of five volumes of poetry: Queuing for the Mudd Club (1985), Ancient Music (1988), Corrupted Treasures (1995), Where the Trees Were (1999), Lost in the Foreground (2003, Duffy & Snellgrove).
