Soft Edges Unsafe Margins is the latest collection of short stories by Tasmanian Writers' Centre member, AVRIL CANEY

AVRIL CANEY left London in the 1960s and almost missed out being liberated by the Beatles and a young Germaine Greer. Since then she has taken delight in Tasmania's landscape and in Hobart's vibrant arts and writing scene, but like many islanders she always keeps a half-packed backpack ready to escape to anywhere. Avril has won many local and national short story awards and produced numerous study guides for Book Club Tasmania. While teaching primary grades Avril self-published several books for young people, and published a children's novel Gabberty's Gully (Parteach 1989). In 1995 she was awarded a Master of Humanities at the University of Tasmania. Soft Edges Unsafe Margins is a collection of some of her prize-winning stories from the last decade.

About Soft Edges Unsafe Margins
'This collection of finely crafted short stories by Avril Caney is a pleasure to read. The author has acute powers of observation and a truly remarkable ability to draw complex characters, in often painfully recognisable situations. … richly varied in style and subject, many of the stories explore the fine and shifting line between connection and disconnection and between love and hate, in the lives of ordinary people: brothers and sisters, husbands and wives - all reaching out to each other across great divides. In this collection the author asks - can we ever really and truly know one another?' Rosie Waitt.
