Call for proposals by new publisher: Brand new niche publisher Nuhouse Press is calling for proposals from would-be authors. “We are in this business to work with writers who have something worthwhile to say. We're not interested in their publishing backgrounds, just whether or not they can write on topics people want to read about. If we think there is a commercial audience for a book that a writer pitches us or if we can work with them to package a book they will sell themselves, then we're interested,” said Leah Bryan, founding partner of Nuhouse Press. The publisher opened for business this month with two brand new titles already rolling off the presses and will also distribute and sell books published elsewhere. Non-fiction book proposals can be sent to Nuhouse Press via email@nuhousepress.com or visit the website for further information www.nuhousepress.com. LONGLINES: CREATING REAL PATHWAYS FOR WRITERS Writers of prose, poetry and drama living away from the metropolitan centres of Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne are warmly invited to send in applications for the Macquarie Group Foundation LongLines Varuna Workshops and Residencies. For each state and territory, one two-week LongLines Varuna residency is awarded. There are 5 places in the prose workshop, 4 in the poetry, and 3 in the drama. Plus there are 15 non-residential readings and consultations –your chance for a considered reading of your whole work plus an hour long conversation with one of Varuna’s experienced team of writing consultants. 35 valuable places in all. But read on! From 2008, the LongLines Poetry Workshop will be presented in partnership with the Australian Poetry Centre, with additional funding from the Myer Foundation, and the four poets selected will be the four poets to be published in the annual New Poets program –the program that has grown from the annual Five Islands Press New Poets Program. Yes, you read that right –being selected for the LongLines Poetry Workshop means a publication! The LongLines Drama Workshop will be presented in partnership with Playlab, with additional funding from Arts Queensland. In 2007 this was a wonderful week –three playwrights, three dramaturges, and one of the playwrights thrillingly redrafted her play four times and went on to a shortlisting in the Queensland Premier’s Drama Awards. This is an astonishing opportunity for playwrights. And for prose writers there’s the new annual Penguin/Varuna Scholarship. Penguin has generously provided a $5000 scholarship, plus 20 hours editorial guidance from Penguin, exclusively for a LongLines writer. Each year, Varuna’s Creative Director Peter Bishop selects up to 15 vibrant and viable manuscripts to present to Penguin –that’s 15 LongLines manuscripts being read and considered by one of Australia’s most distinguished publishing houses. Several of these manuscripts will have been developed through the LongLines Prose Workshop, through the non-residential readings and consultations, or through a LongLines Varuna residency. A LongLines application can make a lot of things happen!

For all information about LongLines, go to www.varuna.com.au/longlinesprogram.html. All applications must be accompanied by an application form with a $25 application fee. All applications must be postmarked no later than 30 April.

SCREEN HUB TO PUBLISH & SELL AUSTRALIAN FILM AND TELEVISION SCRIPTS. Online industry publication Screen Hub (www.screenhub.com.au) is about to begin publishing Australian film and television scripts as electronic books – downloadable from the web. Although producers hold the publication rights to most film and television scripts, Screen Hub has agreed with the AWG to pay an additional 5% ex-gratia royalty to the writers, in addition to the royalty received by the producers. So now is the time to let your producers know that those scripts now have publication value – and more importantly, that they have to do very little work to unlock it. Screen Hub has created a generous standard publication agreement and has run it by both SPAA and the AWG, and the only requirement is that the scripts are provided in electronic form.  They will do the rest. Un-produced scripts will not be considered. And before you think ‘Nobody wants to buy old scripts!’ – Screen Hub says that they have done extensive research on how many people search for this material on Google each month – and there are a lot of searches. Television scripts will retail for $4.99, and film scripts for $5.99. More information and copies of the standard agreement can be had by contacting Screen Hub’s Managing Director, Alex Prior, on 03 9690 6893 or by email alex@screenhub.com.au

9th May 2008: Kit Denton Fellowship. Applications are now open for the 2008 $25,000 Kit Denton Fellowship, presented by the Australian Writers' Foundation (AWF) with the generous support of Zapruders' Other Films. The Kit Denton Fellowship, named in honour of the late father of media personality Andrew Denton, is to reward courage and excellence in performance writing and allows a writer to develop a project to be ready to present to market. Kit Denton, a life time member of the Australian Writers’ Guild, was a scriptwriter, author, poet and lyricist. He is best known for The Breaker, his international best selling novel about the trial and execution of Breaker Morant. Courage can be defined as independence of thought, questioning the status quo, and an attitude of mind in facing diversity with self possession, perseverance and resolution. Ian David was named as the inaugural Kit Denton Fellow at the 2007 AWGIE Awards. Ian is best known for his ground-breaking reality-based dramas Police State and Police Crop, which won AFI Awards in 1989 and 1999, and the AWGIE Award winning Joh's Jury. Ian’s Fellowship project is a 13-part TV series about the law, and its relationship, if any, to justice and is now close to completion. Ian was selected from a shortlist which included playwright Afeif Ismail Abdelrazig, a Sudanese refugee and ex-political prisoner; writer of the award winning film and book Candy, Luke Davis; playwright and human rights lawyer Suzie Miller; playwright Stephen Sewell;playwright and screenwriter Katherine Thomson; playwright Tee O'Neill and writing and production team Sabour Bradley and Claire Atkins.
