From a hot summer in WA to the harsh weather of the Tasmanian Highlands the family of the author came about 1949. Marilyn Quirk has always wondered what happened to the migrants newly arrived, who had lived in the little wooden huts. Her book, Echoes on the Mountain, is the result of research and interviews with ten of these people from war-ravaged countries of Europe - Poland, England, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Lithuania and Berlin, Germany. These are remarkable migrant stories and photographs from the HEC highland village life. Ex-Senator Peter Rae, AO, and Chairman of the Hydro 1993-2004 wrote the foreword and Dr Frank Madill makes comments of recommendation. Some schools are already using this book as a teaching aid and it is also being considered as suitable material to be translated into Braille. |
