Esther Ottaway is a 30 year old Tasmanian poet. Her first book, Blood Universe - a collection of poems themed around pregnancy - was number five on the Tasmanian best seller list after its release in September 2006, and was also launched in Sydney by Judith Beveridge at the Australian Poetry Festival. Esther is one of two Australian Young Poets of the Year 2006 with Poets Union NSW.
Esther has a strong record of publication in newspapers and journals including The Australian, Meanjin, Southerly, Imago, Famous Reporter, Poetrix and Blue Dog, and her poems have won notable literary awards, including First Prize in the 2006 Tasmanian Literary Awards and First Prize in The Write Stuff national poetry competition 2005.
She has written with the support of Arts Tasmania grants in 2005 and 2006 and a Fellowship at Varuna, The Writers House, NSW during 2004. A prize-winning copywriter, Esther worked for ten years as a consultant in marketing and the media, writing a broad range of publications for major local and national organisations.
She lives in Hobart with her husband, jazz musician Kelly Ottaway, and their three year old daughter, Layla.
