Looking for time & space to write...? 

Tasmania is the
Island of Residencies
in 2009

 

Applications for the 2009 Island of Residencies program are invited from published writers living in each and every Australian state and territory and
from writers from all around the world.

Writers living on islands are particularly encouraged to apply.

Residencies are available between March and November 2009 for writers who have published work on any subject, in any form including fiction, non-fiction, poetry,
writing for children and/or young adults, and writing for the stage.

The 2007 Island of Residencies program is presented by the Tasmanian Writers' Centre, with the support of Copyright Agency LimitedArts Tasmania, the City of Hobart, the Australia Council - the Commonwealth Government's arts funding and advisory body, the Burnie City Council, and the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs.

The Tasmanian Writers' Centre is located in Room E101 on the 1st floor of the Salamanca Arts Centre, 77 Salamanca Place Hobart, Tasmania. Opening hours are generally 10-4.30pm Mon-Fri.

The Executive Director of the TWC is Chris Gallagher and the Administrative Assistants are Jo Collins and Jane Williams. The Tasmanian Writers' Centre is a not-for-profit incorporated association, and is supported by Australian taxpayers via state & federal government agents,  Arts Tasmania and the Australia Council. The TWC manages the CAL Residencies, as part of our Island of Residencies program, and we are grateful for the support provided by CAL.

The Tasmanian Writers' Centre supports numerous initiatives that provide opportunities for Tasmanian writers and promote appreciation of Tasmanian writing & literature. These include workshops, residencies and mentorships for Tasmanian writers, as well as providing professional advice to TWC members. Members of the TWC enjoy many benefits including subscription to Island Magazine for only $33 - that's a saving of $13 off the normal subscription rate.

Why we are what we are: The core business of the Tasmanian Writers' Centre is the delivery of a range of services that meets the needs of writers at significant points in their careers. The TWC also aims to promote Tasmanian writing to local, interstate and international audiences.

What we do: The Tasmanian Writers' Centre achieves these aims via a number of program areas including:

  • Assistance to writers including advice on funding applications and self-publishing projects
  • Promoting the stories of Tasmania through Read Tasmania
  • Advocacy for Tasmanian writers locally and nationally
  • Time & space for writers, through our  Residencies program for Tasmanian, Interstate and International writers within Tasmania, interstate and overseas
  • Affordable writers' workshops and masterclasses with local and visiting writers
  • Affordable manuscript assessments
  • Promotion of writer's events and opportunities via our website and bi-monthly newsletter Writas
  • Support for writers' events such as the Tasmanian Poetry Festival
  • A reference library of writers' resources including magazines, books and journals
  • A referral point for writers' groups looking for new members and writers wishing to join or start a new writers' group
