The TWC provides a manuscript assessment service to its members and others wishing to obtain a critical evaluation of their manuscript. Before you approach a publisher make sure you've got your story right! And that includes getting your story right!
You'll have only one chance to impress that publisher, so when they reach for your manuscript from a pile of 99 others sitting on their desk, it had better make a good impression. And that means it has to be in great shape. I know you think it's the greatest thing ever written - but of course you do, you wrote it! But how do you know if anyone else will bother to read beyond the third line? You need a professional appraisal...
So you've embarked on writing the Great Australian Novel. It's taken you quite a few weeks already and you've written about 5,000 words. Are you on the right track. How is the plot developing? Are the characters believable? And what about the structure? Before you spend two years on the next 95,000 words, get a professional to look at your work so far.
The Tasmanian Writers Centre accepts manuscripts for assessment. Please contact the TWC office to enquire about current rates. Manuscript Assessment Frequently Asked Questions 1. How much will an assessment cost? The cost for TWC members depends on the length of the manuscript to be assessed. For current rates information, please contact the TWC office. 2. How should I submit it to you? We require a printed copy of the manuscript, which can be posted to the Centre (to 77 Salamanca Place, Hobart TAS 7000) or delivered by hand if you’re in the area (upstairs in Room E101 on the 1st floor of the Salamanca Arts Centre). Payment should accompany the manuscript - either a cheque, or we can process a credit card payment.
3. What is the process? Writers send their manuscript to the TWC with payment and any accompanying notes or questions for the assessor. We forward your manuscript to one of our assessors and once they have completed the assessment we will forward their written report to you. The turnaround on this process is usually within a few weeks.
4. What can I expect as output from the assessment? You will receive a written report from the assessor, which will incorporate answers to any specific questions from the author, together with any recommendations by the assessor for improvements to the manuscript. You can expect to hear from the assessor what, in their opinion works in your manuscript in its current form and what could be improved upon.
5. When might someone be available to do the assessment? We have a number of assessors available, depending on the genre, so generally an assessment can be done straight away.
