Tuesday 21st October   Ivy Alvarez in conversation with Lyn Reeves    

Ivy Alvarez is the author of Mortal (Washington, DC: Red Morning Press, 2006) a book of poems that examines the relationship between Dee and Seph - modern-day reinventions of Demeter and Persephone - and how the spectre of breast cancer affects them. Her poetry is published in journals and anthologies worldwide and online. She accepted an Arvon Foundation bursary and the honour of Special Poetry Guest to Dublin’s Trinity College/Florida International University poetry summer program in 2004 and in 2005 received prestigious residency fellowships from MacDowell Colony (USA) and Hawthornden Castle (UK). Fundación Valparaíso has invited her to attend a writing residency in Spain during April 2008. Her latest chapbook is what’s wrong. She is also the editor of A Slice of Cherry Pie and We Don't Stop Here, poetry chapbook anthologies inspired by David Lynch’s cult TV show, Twin Peaks, and his film, Mulholland Drive. In the past, Alvarez has been Artiste-in-Residence for SBS, Australia's acclaimed TV/radio network and a guest of numerous writing festivals. In addition to poetry, Alvarez writes plays, reviews and articles, and has served on the editorial board of a number of journals, including the Asia-Pacific Writers Network [apwn], Cordite Poetry Review and qarrtsiluni. Born in the Philippines, Ivy Alvarez grew up in Tasmania, Australia. She is currently resident in Cardiff, Wales, having previously lived in Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.

 

Lyn Reeves’ poetry and stories have been published in journals and anthologies throughout Australia and overseas. Lyn has been a featured reader at many venues including writers’ festivals in Brisbane,Sydney, Darwin, Hobart and Launceston. She has collaborated with painters, photographers, printmakers, musicians and scientists for various poetry events. Her awards include grants from Arts Tasmania and the Literature Board of the Australia Council, a Varuna residential fellowship, a writer-in-residence at St. Helens and another in Darwin. Lyn is an associate editor of Famous Reporter and managing director of Pardalote Press. Her poetry collections are: Walking the Tideline (Pardalote Press, 2001), Speaking with Ghosts, (Ginninderra Press, 2002), Beads (Picaro Press, 2007) and the ink  brushed distance (Walleah Press, 2008). She is one of four poets whose work features in the award-winning poetry anthology, Seasoned with Honey (Walleah Press, 2008). In July she was the featured guest at the Melbourne Poets' Union's eco-poetry series readings, Dreaming the Planet On

 


8 Oct The inaugural Gwen Harwood Memorial Lecture will be given by James Charlton on 8 October. The Lecture, sponsored by FAW, will be held at the Friends' Meeting House, North Hobart, on Wednesday, 8 October at 7.30 pm.

Over the last twelve years Ginninderra Press has published books by over a dozen Tasmanian authors. Come and meet Ginninderra Publisher Stephen Mathews and help us celebrate the launching of the latest four of these short story and poetry collections-

Mind the Gap by Avril Caney,

Bird in the Egg by Steve Holden,

Skin Hunger by Andrea McMahon and

Chairs Abandoned in Odd Corners by Rita Summers.
