Entries are open for the QPF Filmmakers Challenge, 2008! The Queensland Poetry Festival challenges Australian filmmakers, video artists and other multimedia practitioners to produce a short work (5 minutes max) which explores the possibilities of poetic expression via audio visual technology. Although producers hold the publication rights to most film and television scripts, Screen Hub has agreed with the AWG to pay an additional 5% ex-gratia royalty to the writers, in addition to the royalty received by the producers. So now is the time to let your producers know that those scripts now have publication value – and more importantly, that they have to do very little work to unlock it. Screen Hub has created a generous standard publication agreement and has run it by both SPAA and the AWG, and the only requirement is that the scripts are provided in electronic form. They will do the rest. Un-produced scripts will not be considered. And before you think ‘Nobody wants to buy old scripts!’ – Screen Hub says that they have done extensive research on how many people search for this material on Google each month – and there are a lot of searches. New Pacific Studio, Mount Bruce, in the lower North Island, New Zealand, is now open year-round to accept applications for resident fellowships from artists, writers and environmentalists in New Zealand and elsewhere. New Pacific Studio, Mount Bruce is located in a lovely old renovated concrete villa with verandahs, three fireplaces, and five acres of grounds on State Highway 2, just 1 km north of the National Wildlife Centre, five minutes south of Eketahuna. Excellent hiking is available close by in the Tararuas. Two fellows and a resident director may be in occupancy between September and March. Associate director Karen Webster will make daily visits April-August. Each fellow has a large study bedroom and other workspace as needed, including spacious attic and outbuildings. Costs are $70 pw, including linen, heating, use of washing machine and tumble dryer and access to internet and printer. LPG heating throughout. Fellows provide their own catering in communal kitchen and dining room. Free use of station wagon for shopping, and free pick-up from Masterton or Palmerston North.

Wednesday 14th May 2008: Pigeon Poetry call to poets. The Red Room Company has come up with a unique poetry event. Eight Australian poets from city, regional and rural areas nationally will write an original poem to fly in a NSW pigeon race. The poems are to be strapped to the ankle of a professional racing pigeon to home along the NSW South Coast. The poets, none of whom will have previously worked with The Red Room Company will attend the race and read to a live audience. A virtual form guide will be invented for the project’s duration to document the race details online as well as the history and form of the pigeons, the poets and their poems. Spectators and participants will have the opportunity to take part in a 'sweep'. The race will be filmed from a ‘pigeon cam’ perspective, revealed on the Race day. This project will team up with local pigeon associations and take a unique look at the relationship between sport, poetry and gaming. The project was partly inspired by the work of Australian poet, Robert Adamson, who is one of the 8 poets in this project and the only poetry directly invited to participate. Offered to support the development of young writers. Entrants should submit a piece of writing that offers reasoned ethical argument based on humane values. This could take many forms, for example: advocacy or criticism of current ethical frameworks; an ethical response to a contemporary social or political issue; ethical exploration of personal experience or cultural phenomena. The winner's essay, and the two runners-up, will be announced during the Reader’s Feast Crime and Justice Festival in July, and will be published in Eureka Street. The award of $1500 is open to any writer under the age of 35, as of 1 August 2008. Second place in the award is awarded $350, and third $150. Entrants must submit a previously unpublished piece of ethical exploration that will engage a non-specialist audience. Contributions will be judged for their appeal to humane values, such as those that are found within, but are not exclusive to, the best of the Christian humanist tradition. Offering a prize of $3,000 for the winning poem, this national award recognises the significant contribution that poets make to Australian literary culture. The CJ Dennis Literary Awards are offering a total of $800 prize money (First prize in each category is $200) to the winners. First Prize in each category is $200. The theme is “One World One Dream”, following the theme of the Beijing Olympics, 2008. Endowed by Bruce Dawe, one of Australia's best-loved and most widely read poets, as an annual $1500 award to encourage poets throughout Australia, the endowment is held in trust by the University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba, and administered by the Faculty of Arts. The prize is judged by the English Literature staff of the Faculty, chaired by Associate Professor Chris Lee. Bruce Dawe said the decision to endow the prize stemmed from a belief that all universities should encourage the practice of the arts within Australian society. It is hoped that this prize will support poets and help recognise the important contribution they make to Australian culture. Open to all Australian citizens or permanent residents.
