Creating a novel is an exciting but solitary business. To complete a work requires discipline and persistence. Therefore, as well as the structured learning of skills, the intention is for these workshops to provide a supportive forum.
Each participant will be asked to present work, ideas and/or problems for discussion and be prepared to provide thoughtful appraisal and support for the work of others.
Course objective
Depending on the initial level of competency, each participant will be required to complete either, a full length working draft OR a completed work suitable for publication. As there are as many approaches and ways of working as there are writers, each participant will be encouraged to discover and pursue his/her own process.
However certain basics apply, such as: structure, narrative, settings, time- frames, voice, character development, plot development, style, rhythm and pace, polishing, self-editing, staying the distance and reviewing the work, writing submissions and approaching agents and publishers.
These will be covered in depth and within the context of each individual’s work. Requirements: commitment, an email address and a word processing program.
